How to create a calm and curated home

A calm and curated home begins with the things you choose to surround yourself with (and of course, the things you don’t). Thoughtfully selected furniture, natural textures and well-crafted objects will help to bring a sense of ease to a space. Giving bolder pieces the space to stand out brings balance to a room.

Lucy recently shared her thoughts on creating a home that feels lighter and more intentional with Livingetc:

Curate like a museum

"What you surround yourself with in your home matters, as it's an extension of who you are: each object should carry meaning. When styling pieces, consider the beauty of complementary materials - stone, ceramics, wood - and don't shy away from layering. A thoughtful mix creates depth. But balance is key: allow space for a standalone piece to shine - something slightly larger or sculptural that can hold its own and become a focal point."

Here are five of our favourite ways to create a home that feels calm, curated and uncluttered:

1. Start with what you already own

Before introducing anything new, take a look at what you already have. Well-made furniture and objects carry a sense of history and craftsmanship, and the best pieces can be passed down through generations. Rather than holding on to everything for sentimental reasons, be selective. Keeping fewer pieces that you genuinely value will allow you to appreciate them more.

If you’ve inherited furniture or objects that no longer work for your home, consider whether they could have a new life elsewhere. Passing pieces on to friends or family, donating them to charity or offering them to neighbours can be a simple way to let go of things you no longer need, while ensuring they continue to be used and appreciated.

2. Invest in pieces you love

Rather than filling a space quickly, don’t be afraid to take time to invest in pieces that will keep their meaning - whether that’s a beautifully crafted dining table, a ceramic vase picked up while travelling, or a piece of artwork by a favourite or local artist. These are the details that will give your home depth and individuality, and that you’ll continue to love for years to come.

3. Choose furniture that works harder

Choosing furniture that combines craftsmanship with practical design creates a home that feels easier to live in. Modular sofas offer flexibility as family life evolves, adapting to different layouts and making the most of your space. Beautifully designed shelving with hidden cabinets can keep everyday essentials neatly tucked away, allowing surfaces to remain calm and uncluttered while ensuring everything is within easy reach.

4. Let one piece take centre stage

Not every object needs to compete for attention.

A sculptural chair, a beautifully proportioned pendant light or a striking piece of artwork can anchor a room, allowing everything around it to feel calmer.

We often find that restraint creates more impact than abundance. By giving individual pieces space to breathe, their craftsmanship and form can truly be appreciated.

This balance between statement and simplicity is what makes an interior feel effortless rather than over-styled.

5. Allow your home to evolve

The most successful interiors are designed to support the way you live today, while leaving space for new layers to emerge over time.

A carefully designed home provides a strong foundation, balancing layout, materiality and craftsmanship with pieces that feel settled from the moment they're introduced. As life changes, artwork can be discovered, treasured objects can find their place and new additions can sit comfortably alongside what came before.

Designing with longevity in mind creates a home that feels effortless, adaptable and enduring - one that continues to reflect the people who live there without ever feeling static.

Creating spaces with longevity

At Studio Iro, we create interiors designed to be lived in for years to come. Every decision is guided by how a space will be used, how it will feel and how it will evolve over time. We work with natural materials, enduring craftsmanship and thoughtfully chosen pieces to create homes that feel warm, inviting and effortless to live in.

Our approach is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, celebrating the beauty of natural materials, imperfections and the character that develops with age. We favour sustainable materials, timeless design and bespoke furniture that’s made to last, creating homes that continue to reveal new details and grow richer with time.

If you’d like to discuss an upcoming project, we’d love to hear from you.
